This series explores the idea of identity between the character and the essence of a person. I also used it as an opportunity to explore who I am. Maps was motivated by graduation which is an end of one chapter and the beginning of another. After these next few weeks, I will not be a student any longer, which is what I have known for the past twenty years. I will be starting the next chapter of my life as a college graduate.
The character of the person is identified by their portrait and their essence by their fingerprint. I have laser cut their fingerprint to their face as a second layer of identification to their character. The fingerprint of a person is like a map of who they are and where they have been, while their portrait is like a documentation of the person at the specific moment. This combines both, their character and essence which usually are known separately.
